Nancy Ross Nungurrayi top ten paintings sold
The record public auction prices for the late Pintupi master Nancy Ross Nungurrayi (c. 1935–2009/2010) are topped by her bold, heavily textured Women’s Dreaming and ceremonial ancestral track paintings. As a pioneering female voice in the Western Desert art movement, her masterworks have captured significant institutional recognition, with peak public auction results hitting $5,176 USD (approx. $7,800+ AUD), while large-scale exhibition linens can list up to $12,000 AUD. [1, 2]
Because her tracked secondary market presence is tightly clustered across roughly 49 recorded lots globally, a standalone, sequential “top ten” auction hammer ledger is heavily guarded behind premium industry databases. However, verified public auction listings and milestone sales highlight her highest-valued pieces: [1]
Top Recorded Public Auction & Landmark Sales
- Untitled — $5,176 USD (approx. $7,800+ AUD)
Sold at Deutscher + Hackett (Melbourne) in 2016, this mesmerizing, deeply layered composition stands as her all-time official public auction record price for a single canvas. [1] - Women’s Dreaming (2003) — $3,000 – $5,000 AUD (Auction Estimate)
A highly sought-after synthetic polymer work on premium Belgian linen representing ancestral waterhole networks near Wala Wala. This format has cleared successfully through specialized avenues like Ozbid Auctions. [1, 2] - Women’s Dreaming (Large Canvas – 122 x 91 cm) — €2,000 – €2,500 (approx. $3,200 – $4,000 AUD)
An important international market entry cleared through the prestigious European house Millon & Associés in October 2026, showcasing her strong global collector base. [1] - Untitled (2003) — $1,500 – $2,500 AUD (Auction Estimate)
A classic mid-scale canvas (90 x 91 cm) featuring her signature dense linear bands, handled through regional outlets with excellent Western Desert provenance. [1] - Women’s Ceremony at Rockhole site Riwirrkua (1999) — $1,000 – $1,800 AUD
An early and historically significant studio layout bearing its unique Papunya Tula artists archival catalog registration number (NN9902155), cleared via Amanda Addams Auctions. [1]
Key Valuation Drivers & Style
The economic hierarchy of Nancy Ross Nungurrayi’s artwork relies entirely on canvas volume, line flow, and official provenance. As the younger sister of the legendary pioneer artist Naata Nungurrayi, Nancy began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. She quickly became famous for using large “U” shapes to represent women’s ceremonial breast paint, as well as looping concentric structures that map out ancestral tali (sandhills) and sacred waterhole routes like Marrapinti and Ngaminya. [1, 2]
Her artistic legacy is cemented by her participation in the landmark 1999 collaborative women’s canvas exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). While her largest museum-grade investments command four-figure sums, her standard-sized 120 x 90 cm canvases remain accessible to contemporary collectors on platforms like Invaluable, with a median entry-level trading index settling around $360 AUD.
