Maxie Tjampitjinpa top ten paintings sold
The record public auction prices for the late Warlpiri pioneer master Maxie Tjampitjinpa (c. 1945–1997) are led by his dynamic, visually striking representations of Bush Fire Dreaming (Warlukurlangu) and the Flying Ant Dreaming. Renowned for winning the 1984 Northern Territory Art Award, his highly collectible, museum-grade early canvases command thousands to tens of thousands of dollars at prestigious secondary market houses. [1, 2, 3]
Top Recorded Public Auction Sales
Because historical art indices require premium industry subscriptions, an exact sequential “top ten” auction ledger is guarded. However, multi-decade market results from premier secondary houses highlight his highest-valued milestone sales:
- Bush Fire Dreaming — $16,730 AUD
Sold by Bonhams & Goodman in March 2006, this vibrant masterwork stands as his highest-recorded public auction sale. [1] - Country in Flood — $9,084 USD (approx. $13,500+ AUD)
A highly sought-after topographical abstraction depicting the changing central desert landscape, sold through Lawson-Menzies in 2012. [1] - Bush Fire (1993) — $7,767 USD (approx. $11,500 AUD)
A standout mid-career work featuring his iconic fine-stippled, kinetic lines representing smoke and heat trajectories, which set a long-standing international index benchmark. [1] - Water / Flying Ant Dreaming (1994) — $4,500 – $6,500 AUD (Primary/Secondary Valuation)
A large-format canvas detailing the movements of the ancestral winged insects around Papunya, initially sourced via the Aboriginal Gallery of Dreamings. [1] - Fire Dreaming (1990s) — $1,500 – $3,500 AUD (Realised Standard Tier)
His classic mid-sized studio linens (often 124cm x 80cm) regularly clear through specialized platforms like Invaluable and regional Australian fine art sales within this accessible price bracket. [1]
Key Valuation Drivers & Institutional Value
The financial appreciation of Tjampitjinpa’s art relies heavily on its provenance and stylistic evolution. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on strict concentric geometries, Maxie broke new ground by using a tiny, customized piece of wood or a fine stick to apply thousands of microscopic dots. This created a sweeping sense of fluid movement, mimicking desert winds, grass fires, and drifting dust. [1]
While his standard-tier studio works remain relatively affordable due to a limited secondary market supply (with roughly 136 lots tracked since 1989), his premier masterworks carry major institutional weight. His pieces are permanently preserved in the premier collections of the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW). [1]
